Simple ways to improve WiFi connectivity in your student home 🛜

There are many free and affordable ways to improve the WiFi connectivity in your student home. Check our out top tips below for some of the most simple practices.

Optimal router placement

One of the easiest ways to improve a WiFi connection is by moving the router. Having the router near walls can cause interference and stop the signal from reaching devices that are far away. The best position for a WiFi router is being placed above furniture, in an open space. This will allow the WiFi signals to pass through the rooms easily, as large bulky items of furniture won’t be in the way. If your access point is in a hall way, try placing the router on a shelf.

Reduce frequency interference

You can try to reduce wireless interference that can be caused by items like microwaves. Microwaves and other wireless devices operate at a frequency of 2.4 gigahertz (GHz). This is a very common frequency and may be the cause of the poor WiFi connectivity. Try switching these products off when you aren’t using them, or ask your landlord if they can replace these items with devices that use a 5.8 GHz or 900 megahertz (MHz) frequency.

Updating firmware

Another simple way to fix the WiFi connection in your student home, is by updating the firmware. Manufactures are always improving software however you might not always get notified about these updates. Most routers have the update process built into the admin interface, so you can just hit the upgrade button. However, some old router modems require you to visit the manufacture’s website, download the firmware file and upload it to the admin interface. Still an easy process, just slightly longer.
