Lewisham Area Guide | Living in Lewisham

Lewisham is a very old part of London. Located in south east London, Lewisham actually dates back to the year 862! In the 17th and 18th centuries, Lewisham was the home of many fashionable mansions, however over the years it has lost its charm somewhat.

Lewisham boasts great public transport links. Bus run from the town centre down to Brixton and Elmers End, all the way through to Shoreditch, Stratford and Holloway. Trains can take you into London Victoria and Charing Cross in 20 minutes, or London Bridge in 15 minutes. Living here also grants you access to the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), which can take you to East London.

Lewisham is home to a large shopping centre ready for you to purchase all your new clothes and homeware. If high-street fashion isn’t your thing, Lewisham has many affordable charity shops where you can buy second-hand. Lewisham also has an outdoor market that sells local produce and fresh fruit and vegetables.

Lewisham doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to safety so make sure to be alert when walking around at night. During the day you will be fine and surrounded by families and the friendly local community.

Lewisham shopping centre

Lewisham offers tons of shops to local residents. Shop on the latest looks at T K Maxx, New Look and H&M, or head to the charity shops for some preloved items. Stop off a Starbucks for a coffe and a cake before continuing on with your shopping trip. The shopping centre is also home to an M&S and a Sainsbury’s so you can get your weekly shop done too!

Take a trip to Lewisham’s bowling alley. Knock down 10 pins with friends or you date, then get together for some fun in the arcade afterwards. Once you’ve exhausted yourself with all the fun, head over to the bar and grab a pizza and a drink. You can even get special student prices, allowing you to save money on all the fun!

Lewisham market

Lewisham market began in 1906 and is still running today! It runs everyday between 9am – 6pm (10am – 4pm on a Sunday) with vendors selling everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, to household items and clothes.
