The best food joints in Cathays for students

Cathays is probably the best place to live in Cardiff as a student, shortly followed by Roath. It’s the student hub known for its pubs, grub and lively atmosphere. Whether you’re missing home and craving a roast dinner, or you’re after some Instagram worthy avocado on toast, Cathays has it all. Here are the best food joints in Cathays for students.

Stag Coffee

Situated on Crwys Road, Stag Coffee is a student favourite which definitely doesn’t scrimp on its portions. Stag is known for its hearty breakfasts, premium sandwiches and impressive burgers. It also caters for all dietary requirements including plenty of vegan options and gluten-free alternatives. The restaurant is always busy, and this isn’t surprising as along with its incredible food, it boasts funky decor and a quaint outdoor seating area. Stag is student budget-friendly too, as you can grab food and a drink here for under £10. The Stag burger is well worth a try.

The Early Bird

The Early Bird is another photogenic foodie hotspot, known for its brunches, bakery goods and coffee. The cafe offers a range of different brunch options which include plenty of vegan options, and it also sells a variety of brownies, doughnuts, loaves and cakes to go with coffee. Many of these are also vegan, with the cafe recently serving vegan peanut butter blondies – delish. You can find the Early Bird cafe on Woodville Road with its bright yellow door, only a stones throw away from some of the best student streets in Cathays.

Irie Shack

Irie Shack is a Caribbean bar and grill located on Woodville Road, in the centre of Cathays. The restaurant is known for its amazing 2 for 1 cocktail happy hour, and the food there is just as popular. Irie Shack serves traditional Caribbean cuisine including jerk chicken, authentic curries, classic gourmet burgers, salads and wraps with multiple gluten-free options. Once again this is an affordable student favourite, with a meal and a drink setting you back just under £15.

The Bagel and Burger Kitchen

Known as the BB Kitchen this food joint is a gem located in the middle of Salisbury Road, Cathays. Its interior is modern and its burgers are diner worthy, with glossy brioche buns and gooey cheese. The BBK has a variety of vegan options and their halloumi bites are next level. It’s so good that it seems all the artists that perform in Cardiff seem to get their grub from there, including AJ Tracey, Nelly and Sean Paul.

The Hellenic Eatery

Located on foodie hotspot, Crwys Road, the Hellenic Eatery is a Greek restaurant serving grilled halloumi, homemade houmous, traditional gyros and souvlaki. Dining here is incredibly cheap, with a meal for two including two gyros and a large portion of chips costing just £10. They do take-out too, which is perfect for hangovers.

Blanche Bakery

If you want a break from revision or you’re meeting up with your friends in between lectures, Blanche Bakery is the place to be. Blanche are renowned for selling the best vegan doughnuts around Cardiff and their coffee is just as tasty. They constantly change their doughnut flavours at Blanche, with delicious and unique concoctions such as the French Toast doughnut topped with cinnamon, vanilla and fresh berries. Blanche also serves brunch options including a vegan B.L.T, pancakes and salads. Both the food and the decor at Blanche is Instagram worthy, and so it’s definitely worth heading to Mackintosh place to check this place out.

Family Fish Bar

It may not be fine dining, but Family Fish Bar is the best place to get your chippy tea or a post-night out feast whilst at university. Situated on Salisbury Road, the chip shop is the resident pit stop on the way home from town and is always thriving. The owner of Family Fish Bar, Abdul, is a Cathays legend, and if you’re lucky enough you’ll get your photo featured on the Fam Fish wall of fame. The chips and curry sauce are a must from here and cost less than £3.

The Flora

The Flora is especially loved by Cardiff students for its classic roast dinner. It brings you the roasties, yorkies and gravy you’d never thought you’d miss so much every Sunday. The pub is situated in the heart of Cathays, on Cathays Terrace and is also a popular student hangout during the week, serving cocktails for £5 all day.

The Woodville

Known for one of the best places to grab a pint in Cathays, The Woodville has a range of delights on its menu. It offers daily deals such as the 25p Wing Wednesday and 25p Pancake Thursday. The Woodville sells the traditional pub grub, including burgers and chips, mac and cheese and an array of vegan options including cauliflower ‘wings’, a BBQ pulled jackfruit kebab, and plant-based tikka masala. You can’t miss the Woody (as it’s named by the students) as it’s located on the corner of Woodville Road just opposite Lidl.

Mowgli’s is a restaurant serving Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine situated down Crwys Road. This restaurant is always lively and the prices here are student-friendly, with curry, sides and poppadoms costing under £15 each. The food is 100% halal and the menu states that the chef will cook dishes which aren’t on the menu if it is required.
