Though not the Scottish capital, Glasgow is often considered a capital of student life in the UK. The city offers its students a perfect mix of culture and a vibrancy that brings students from all over the world to study at one of its three large universities each year. As with any city, picking the right area to live in as a student can be a difficult task for those that haven’t had the opportunity to visit the city before (and indeed those that have!).

Area’s can differ significantly in terms of offering, so therefore your choice may differ based on your requirements, lifestyle wants, budgets and of course the commute time from university you’re willing to endure. Glasgow has a number of areas to choose from so we’ve put together a breakdown for you to help you out. Let’s check our the best student areas to live in Glasgow!

Finnieston, Glasgow:

Finnieston is a great location for students in Glasgow to live, with it being centrally located near to the University of Glasgow and the University of Strathclyde. If it’s location that is your big driver, then Finnieston could be your perfect neighbourhood choice.

Furthermore, in Finnieston you’re only a stones throw from the main shopping district of Kelvingrove and River Clyde, meaning you’ll never be short of local amenities should you need them.

The one drawback to Finnieston is that given is great location, you can expect to pay slightly higher prices that in other places in the city.

Hillhead, Glasgow

Located in the vibrant West End area of Glasgow Hillhead is packed with brilliant restaurants, great pubs and bars and allows students easy access to the main shopping areas of Glasgow. In terms of location, Hillhead is located on the other side of Kelvingrove Park, and is a perfect location for students studying at the University of Glasgow which is only a matter of a few minutes away.

Hillhead is one of Glasgow’s best student areas to live, but as a result of this prices for accommodation and houses tend to be among the highest for university living options in Glasgow (sorry to be the bearer of bad news!) – that said, with a central location you’ve got great access and minimal transport costs, with all the amenities you need bang on your doorstep.

Anniesland, Glasgow:

Anniesland is a mix for you. A great location for students studying at the University of Glasgow whle also on the doorstep of Glasgow’s West End hub. It lacks the location of both Hillhead and Finnieston with it being slightly further out from the centre but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have a lot going on.

While it’s more of a bus ride (only 10 minutes) from the city centre, this has the benefit of meaning that students can get a better quality for their money or choose cheaper accommodation options for those on a tight budget.

It’s great for supermarkets, with the student favour Aldi in the neighbourhood ready and waiting to stock up the fridge in your new student house or halls.

Partick, Glasgow:

Very near Hillhead lies Partick, another great located area for students which are attending the University of Glasgow. Supermarkets, shops, and cheap (but good) eateries sit on every corner making it easy to understand why living in Partick is a student favourite

The area also has some great transport links for students making it easy to access both University and the Glasgow city centre as well.

City Centre, Glasgow:

The city centre draws students of both universities each year. As expected, it often will have some of the higher rents for students though but it does deliver all the expected benefits of city centre living. Amazing shops, restaurants and bars on your doorstep and clubs and entertainment venues on every street.
