So you’ve got into university and you’ll soon be heading off to a new city… it’s seriously exciting to say the least! Next, you start to wonder how on earth to go about sifting through and finding the perfect student accommodation in Cardiff for you. One of the best places to start looking is the neighborhood of Cathays. Cathays is one of Cardiff’s most popular student areas and serves thousands of Cardiff students every year. To help get your head around Cathays student housing, we’ve discussed the very best Cathays streets to live in as a student.
We know we just said Cardiff University, but Cathays student housing can still be enjoyed by those studying at all Cardiff universities.
To make this a bit simpler:
For those who’d rather avoid walking or are always on the verge of being late for lectures, we’d recommend sticking to the recommended areas above, unless you can handle a Duke of Edinburgh style expedition to uni each morning.
We’ve already provided numerous Cardiff areas guides which will give you a great grounding to the areas you might want to live in. That said, we thought we could narrow this down even further, so we’ve dove into the best Cathays streets. We know these are the best Cathays streets, as students eagerly flock to them year after year.
Salisbury Road is the main artery of Cardiff’s student life. Because of this, living on Salisbury Road – probably the best Cathays street for students – will locate you in the heart of everything that’s currently going on. If you suffer from FOMO (fear of missing out), then Salisbury Road is the place to be.
Salisbury Road has everything you could ever need. It has easy convenience with a Tesco Express on the road itself, a diverse choice of takeaways that line each side of the street, and most importantly, you’ll find a Greggs! This particular Greggs caused quite a stir when it opened a few years ago, but is loved by those who live near it.
Being on Salisbury Road means you’ll have a quick and easy walk to uni or into town. Let’s face it, a long walk is probably the last thing you want at the end of a heavy night out, so being able to avoid this is a big plus point in our book.
Where pubs are concerned, you’ll be spoilt for choice, with long-time favourite Gassy Jacks pretty much on your front doorstep.
Next up is the world-famous Wyverne Road. Well, it isn’t quite world-famous, but we still think it’s pretty great!. Lodged on a diagonal road between Woodville Road and Salisbury Road, living here will put your accommodation only a few minutes walk from pretty much everything you’d ever need in day-to-day student life.
As far as shopping and convenience goes, students can make a quick dash to K&C Stores (a go-to convenience shop), so you don’t have to travel far for a crate of beer or a pizza to bung in the oven. If it’s pubs you’re after, then just pop to the end of the road and you’ll be greeted by another Cardiff University student landmark – The Woodville Pub.
This area is also home to many of the Cardiff student accommodation letting agencies that Resooma works with.
Woodville Road is one of those road names that will just stick with you. It’s a cracker, lined with nicely-sized terrace housing. We’d even go as far as to say that it’s filled almost exclusively by students.
Getting to university in the morning is as simple as rolling out of bed and heading over the bridge. Within a matter of minutes, you’ll find yourself at the Law School and Cardiff University Library. It’s also a minute’s walk from Cathays Train Station, making it super simple to get from one spot to another.
As we said above, the renowned Cardiff establishment – The Woodville – will become your local. Like hundreds and thousands of past students, you’ll fall in love with the place and quickly become part of the furniture during your stay.
If you’re needing to pop to the shops, Sainsbury’s is only at the end of the road, along with a range of delicious takeaways and restaurants. Balti Cuisine in particular is definitely worth a visit.
Ideal for social butterflies, living on Miskin Street will have you bumping into everyone you’ve ever met in Cardiff. You’ll know whether or not this personally appeals, but let’s just say that you’re almost guaranteed to come across fellow students when leaving a house party or when trudging back home after a big night out at the Cardiff Student Union.
As for the location, Miskin Street is right in the middle of Cathays. Heading up the road will have you reach the Woodville Pub. Meanwhile, heading down will take you to Salisbury Road. This convenience makes Miskin Street perfectly placed for a pint at Gassy Jacks or a quick takeaway from one of Salisbury Road favourites.
As far as Cardiff University goes, you’ll be very close by. Many students can even see the Students Union from their bedroom window! You’re also only a short walk from Cathays station, making Miskin Street ideal for students needing to travel to uni (including Treforest Campus or the centre of Cardiff).
Lastly, remember Cardiff has other student areas and housing options. Cathays is perfect for students looking to be in the heart of student life and those looking for a house share. Aside from the best Cathays streets which we’ve discussed, there are numerous other areas worth checking out – Cardiff really is an amazing student city!
