So you’ve got into uni, you’re going to a new city…it’s exciting. Then you start to wonder how on earth to sift through and find the perfect student accommodation in Cardiff for you. We’re here to help, city by city, with our top tips for your new pad.
Our favourite streets in Cathays
We’ve already provided a very concise area guide to Cardiff which will give you a great grounding to the areas you might want to live. That said, we thought we could pin this down further for you so we’ve put this post together a slightly different version below picking out some favourite places and streets that students want to live in whilst studying at Cardiff University.
We know we just said Cardiff University, but Cathays can be good for students at all universities however the general theme you’ll learn to realise is Cardiff Uni = Cathays, Cardiff Met = Roath, USW = Town. For the lazy walkers/constant latecomers amongst us we’d recommend sticking to the trend unless you can handle a D of E expedition to uni each morning.
Salisbury Road is the main artery in Cardiff’s favourite student area and targeting your search for your new student digs towards this area of Cathays will locate you in the heart of student life.
Salisbury road has everything you could ever need. Easy convenience, with a Tesco Express on the road, a diverse choice of takeaways line each side of the street, and most importantly…. you’ll find a Greggs! It caused quite a stir when it opened a couple of years back.
Being on Salisbury Road means you’ll have an easy walk either to uni or into town. Let’s face it, a easy walk to and from town can be important after those freshers night out.
For pubs you will be spoilt for choice with long time favourite Gassy Jacks pretty much on your front door step.
The world famous Wyverne Road, well not really world famous but we think it is a pretty great. Lodged on a diagonal road between Woodville Road and Salisbury Road living here will put your accommodation only a few minutes walk from pretty much everything you really need in student life.
As far as shopping and convenience goes, students can make a quick dash to K&C Stores so you’re never far away from topping your glass or grabbing a pizza to bung in the oven. If it’s pubs you want, then just pop to the end of the road and you’ll be greeted by another Cardiff University student landmark – The Woodville Pub.
The area is also home to many of the student accommodation letting agencies that Resooma work with, you can search their properties here.
Woodville Road is just one of those road names that will stick with you. It’s a cracker, lined with good sized terrace housing and we’d go as far as saying filled exclusively by students.
Getting to university in the morning is as simple as rolling out of bed, heading over the bridge you’re at the Law School and Cardiff University Library. It’s also, minutes walk from Cathays Train Station making it dead simple to come and go.
As we said above, the renowned Cardiff establishment – The Woodville – will become your local and we have no doubt that you’ll become part of the furniture there during your stay.
If you’re needing to pop to the shops, Sainsburys is only at the end of the road along with a range of takeaways and restaurants – Balti Cuisine is definitely worth a visit.
Ideal for the social butterflies, living on Miskin Street will having you bumping into everyone you’ve ever met in Cardiff. Typically, unavoidable when you are leaving a party, or on the 7am walk of shame after a big night at Cardiff Students Union just up the road.
As for the location, Miskin Street is right in the middle of cathays. Heading up the road intersects with the Woodville Pub and down will bring you only Salisbury road perfectly placed for a pint at Gassy Jacks or a quick take way from one of Salisbury Roads favorites.
As far as University goes you’ll be very central, so much so you’ll probably be able to see the Students Union from your bedroom window. Your also only a short walk from Cathays station making it ideal for students needing to travel to Uni, perhaps at Treforest Campus or in town.
Lastly, remember Cardiff has other student areas and housing options. Cathays is perfect for students looking to be in the heart of student life and those looking for a house share.
