Moving house is a big deal. It’s exciting but also daunting upping sticks and leaving important places and people behind, so it will undoubtedly put some strain on you psychologically. Moving anxiety affects a lot of people and the chances are that it affects you too but your mental health is important to us so we’ve created this guide to help alleviate your moving anxiety.

Manage your time effectively ⏰

Managing your time effectively will go a long way in minimising moving anxiety. It’s important that you start early, break the move into manageable chunks, and choose your moving day wisel. You’ll have your work cut out for you searching for the perfect place, packing and cleaning, so if you start early you’ll have plenty of time to sort things out.

The benefits of planning ahead of time is that it means you’re ahead of the game, which brings you peace of mind. It also means the work itself will be easier. If you break the work into manageable chunks it’ll put less strain on your mental health. Think of it this way, you could carry a heavy load all at once, or a little at a time so it’s easier on your back.

You’ll also want to arrange moving out on a date that’s convenient for you. For example you might favour moving on a Friday, that way you’ll have the weekend to relax after a busy move and to get acquainted with your new digs.

Organise what you do with your time ⏱️

Create a checklist of tasks. Checklists help ensure you don’t forget anything, and will give you tangible goals and a sense of satisfaction when you complete them. We’ve made a moving checklist for you to download and use. Click 👉 here 👈

One of the biggest tasks will be packing. Have a sort out day and decide what you’re taking, what’s going to charity, what can be recycled and what can be thrown away. Set aside a bag of necessities and pack things that you know you’ll need on the first say, so that they can be in easy reach.

Stop buying a food shop a week before you leave so you can use up everything you have. Cancel bills and set up your utilities in your new house so they’re ready when you arrive. If you’re living in a shared home and are worried about splitting up bills and utilities with your new housemates, you could sign up to Resooma. We bundle all your bills into one monthly payment, split evenly between housemates, so no one has to owe each other money every again. Update your address for stuff like your amazon delivery and of course book time off work so you’ve got a clear timetable for moving.

Why not get acquainted with your new area ahead of time? Meet your neighbours and wander the area and get to know where the shops, restaurants and pubs are. We’ve created a collection of neighbourhood guides, so take a look and see what gems are in your new area.

The BEST thing for moving anxiety 📦

The best thing you can do for moving anxiety is get help and there’s plenty out there. Consider setting aside some money for a professional moving company. They lead you through the process and take a lot of the pressure off your plate. They’ll carry boxes, pack things, disassemble and reassemble furniture you name it! Some even offer storage services!

Also, consider asking family and friends to help set aside a day to pack. Or clean with your housemates and make it fun. Get some drinks, order some pizza. It’ll help take the edge off the whole thing. Download and print off our cleaning rota to help dish out the cleaning tasks!

But most of all make sure you’re getting the support you need for your mental health. This is a big change and it’s important that you’re working through your feelings. This might mean communicating with friends and family, or perhaps a counsellor or someone more removed. Charities like Mind or Samaritans offer support when you’re feeling vulnerable and could make a huge difference to your mental state.

Ultimately it’s important to remember how exciting this next step in your life is too. A fresh start, new people, expanding your horizons. For some it’s even a chance at independence. Good luck with the move, and look after yourself 💛
