So you’ve got into uni, you’re going to a new city…it’s exciting. Then you start to wonder how on earth to find the perfect student accommodation in Cardiff for you. We’re here to help, area by area, street by street, to give you all the information you need to make the right choice on where to live.
We’ve already provided a very concise area guide to Cardiff which will give you a great grounding to the areas you might want to live. That said, we thought we could pin this down further for you so we’ve put Roath under the microscope picking out our favourite streets that students can live in whilst studying at University in Cardiff.
Roath, traditionally has been a home for students studying at Cardiff Met, but has its benefits for both USW and Cardiff University students as well. Find out why we love this area!
Living on Richmond road offers students accommodation close to Cardiff Engineering school, Trevithick Building. Our advice, find somewhere in the middle so you can dash under the bridge into Cathays and make the most of the amenities on Salisbury Road.
At the top of the road, although you’ll be further from town you’ll edge further into the heart of Road meaning you’ll be a stone’s throw from the convenience stores, Tescos and takeaways on Albany Road as well as pubs like the Royal George.
City road has a constant hustle and bustle atmosphere to it – it never really sleeps and living here as a student, you’ll feel the atmosphere. Living here, you’ll be exposed to a total mix of cultures, with a selection of restaurants from almost every area of the globe. Our top picks are Troys for Turkish, Tenkaichi for Japanese cuisine and of course Ice Cream at Kaspa’s.
At the bottom end (city centre end), students can choose from two fantastic residences, both The neighbourhood located just off City Road on the Parade and Arofan House – both ideally located for access to town and Cardiff University engineering school.
If it’s student housing you’re looking for then try checking out any of the interlocking streets and you’ll find plenty of student accommodation options.
Another busy Roath road – probably not the best option if you need parking – is Albany Road. Walking along Albany Road you’ll find number of popular student roads adjoining it. While actually living on the road many not be the best choice any of the adjoining streets provide an abundance of shared housing for many Cardiff Met students in particular.
The road has great bus routes up to Cyncoed Campus, with the Met Rider taking a number of stops along the road.
Shopping wise, you’ve got a Tesco express that should provide pretty much everything you need and then a range of takeaways. Albany Road also is home to a lovely coffee #1 which can be the perfect place to escape the chaos of your student house while studying for you exams.
We think this is our favorite, but being one of the nicer parts of Roath it will likely cost you a bit more as you’re not drifting into the more sub-urban young professional area of Roath. Located only a short walk from Roath Park, you’ll have everything you need to clear the head on a nice walk or run around the lake when exams get too much.
Wellfield Road is also home to Judes, the famous Cardiff ice cream parlour and wow, come summer you’ll be glad it’s just up the road. From a convenience perspective, Wellfield Road has it all, nice coffee shops, bistro style bars for when the parents come to visit, banks, tescos express for groceries and our favourite food place Wok to Walk.
Let’s not forget the sun terrace at Juno Lounge, where you can enjoy a fantastic brunch and a few beers on a summer’s day.
This road makes the list on behalf of the student looking for accommodation in a quieter part of town. Renting student accommodation here will give you views over Roath Park out your windows. As far as convenience goes, it’s only a short walk to Wellfield Road to pick up your groceries from Tesco Express or to grab a quick drink or bite to eat at Juno Lounge before heading back to the books.
Of us this is more of a post grad or masters student territory but well worth a look if you’re looking for something a little more out the way.
Lastly, remember Cardiff has other student areas and housing options. Cathays is perfect for students looking to be in the heart of student life and those looking for a house share.
