Trying to keep your energy bills down is proving to be an ongoing challenge for many UK households, with people always on the lookout for new and innovative ways to cut back. There are plenty of ways to achieve this goal of reduced bill payments, including minor habitual tips like not overfilling the kettle. Today though, we’re taking a look at a handful of energy saving devices and gadgets that can be used to keep your monthly spending down.

Free energy saving devices and gadgets

If you’re looking for ways to cut down on your energy bill then we have some good news – there are numerous gadgets that can help households save money while reducing their carbon footprint. Here, we’ve gone over some of the best energy saving devices for your home.

Radiator foil

The Centre for Sustainable Energy says that around 35% of radiator heat is wasted through the walls. Luckily, there’s a simple solution for this. All you need to do is place some radiator foil behind your radiator, which will make a huge difference in keeping the majority of heat trapped within your home.

Energy-saving plugs

Did you know that appliances still use up energy when on standby or turned off? This is known as ‘vampire energy’ and can end up costing £30 a year. This number can be erased by pulling your plugs from the wall or just switching them off, but we recognise that doing this can be easy to forget. In which case, a handy alternative is smart plugs. These can be controlled by your smartphone and will show electricity usage for individual plugs. You can set timers to automatically switch them on or off.

LED lightbulbs

LED lightbulbs are way more energy efficient than traditional alternatives. A typical halogen bulb costs £8.42 a year to run and will last for around 2,000 hours. On the other hand, an LED bulb costs just £1.71 to run for a year and will last for an impressive 25,000 hours. LED lightbulbs also tend to retail fairly cheap, with Phillips bulbs starting from £3, making the switch-over process a relatively inexpensive one.

Eco showers

Regardless of whether you have a gas or electric-powered shower, showering is one of the biggest energy users on a day-to-day basis. Using an eco shower head will cut down on both the amount of water and energy you use, without having any impact on water pressure. An average shower uses 10 to 15 litres of water a minute, whereas a water-efficient showerhead uses just 8 litres.

Smart meters and smart thermostats

One of the best gadgets out there for saving energy is a smart meter. These measure your electricity and gas consumption while collecting data about your usage behaviour. In turn, this helps you understand your energy consumption so that your usage can be adjusted in the future if required. They also send usage data to your service provider to continuously monitor and update your billing.

Similarly, smart thermostats make heating more efficient by only warming up rooms that are currently in use. Over time, they learn how long it takes to heat your home, allowing them to achieve the right temperature exactly when you want.

Chimney draught excluder

If you have a functioning fireplace then this is definitely something you should take advantage of on cold winter evenings. However, when this fireplace isn’t in use, quite a lot of heat will be lost through the chimney. This means that your central heating system will have to work harder to keep your home warm. One workaround for this is a chimney draught excluder which will reduce some of the heat lost. Numbers vary, but some chimney draught excluders claim to save around 4% of your total monthly heating bill!
