How to Set Up Bills 💡

Below we’ve listed out a step by step guide on how to set up bills in your new home 👇

Step one: Find and read the meters

When you move into a new property it’s important to take note of what the gas, electric and water meter readings are. This will help with the energy supplier that the previous tenants used, know how much you have used in between switching suppliers

Finding your meters can be difficult too. Most meters are either in the basement, under the stairs or outside of your property. If you live in a flat, the meters for all apartments will be in the same place and the ones for your address should be labelled with your flat number

To read your meter, you first need to understand what type of meter you have, as different meters require different ways of reading them. We’ve written an extensive guide (and filmed a video) on how to take a meter reading, so if you’re unsure of the type of meter that you have, check out our other blog post 👉 here 👈

Step two: Find out who the current energy supplier is

When you move into a new property it will be receiving energy for the supplier that the previous tenants used. As the new tenant living in the property, you become responsible for paying the bills from the first day that you move in. This means you need to find out which company/companies are supplying your property. Your landlord should know the answer to this but if not you don’t need to panic! We’ve listed below some helpful services that can help you get the information you need.

Find out who supplies the gas to your property

You can use the FREE Find My Supplier online tool. Simply type in your postcode, select the address and the tool can tell you who is currently supplying gas to your home.

Find out who supplies the electricity to your property

It’s a little more difficult to find out who supplies your electricity. You’ll need to contact the electricity distribution company for your region and ask them. Below is a list of contact information for the distribution companies 👇

RegionDistribution companyNumber to call
London, East and South Easthttps://www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/tel:08456015467
North East Englandhttp://www.northernpowergrid.com/tel:08450707172
North West Englandhttps://www.enwl.co.uk/tel:08001954141
South Wales, Midlands and South Westhttp://www.westernpower.co.uk/tel:08456015972
Southern Englandhttps://www.ssepd.co.uk/home/tel:08450262554
Northern Scotlandhttps://www.ssen.co.uk/tel:08000483515
Southern Scotlandhttp://www.spenergynetworks.co.uk/tel:03301010300

Step three: Submit your meter readings to the current energy suppliers

Once you’ve found out who the current energy suppliers are, give them your contact details and the meter readings that you took, and notify them of the date that you moved into the property. They will then set up a new account for you, with them.

Step four: Pay the old supplier’s final bill and switch suppliers

If you are switching to a different energy provider you will need to pay the final bill from the old supplier before switching. It takes roughly 21 days to switch energy suppliers, but can take longer so it’s important to start this process early. When switching, make sure you take a meter reading the day of the switch, as you will need to provide these details to the new supplier but also the old one so they know how much to charge you for your final bill.
